B & L Models Taking It to the Streets

B & L Models Taking it to the Streets

Bill Cross examines the B & L 11001010 resin-printed 3D gas station Lambro, Tri-Cabs and B & L Models.

Introduction

Gecko Models has created a stir announcing a styrene kit of the Lambro Motor-Tricycle, but B & L Models already has one out in 3D-printed resin. This kit comes from B&L’s Streets of Saigon series, which also includes motorized pedicabs and a gasoline station. These sets come with figures, animals and other items that can be used to populate a Vietnam War vignette or diorama. Even now, Saigon (now called Ho Chi Minh City officially, though no one refers to it by that name in Vietnam) runs on scooters and small vehicles.

Lambros were manufactured by the Italian manufacturer Lambretta, and there were literally thousands in the streets of Saigon, especially after the end of public bus service in 1971. These vehicles were capable of carrying up to twelve passengers, 10 in the rear and 2 beside the driver. The wealthy who could not afford to hire a driver or buy a car chose pedicabs as their mode of transportation.

Contents

Unlike most styrene kits being released today, these 3D-printed vehicles and figures are simple and easy to build. Assembly is simple because many parts are one piece. Some cleanup may be required because they are 3D-printed, particularly at the point where the objects attach to their “trees”. The assembly of the station was completed in less than one hour. Most of that time was spent removing parts from the “trees”. “

The Review(s)

Simply-put, 3D resin printing is a game changer for modeling. Niche kits no longer languish because of the lack of an experienced resin pourer or a manufacturer who produces styrene. The items are simple to design, make and build. Some modelers feel this takes away from the experience, or that it’s “not real modeling,” but I say bravo to B & L Models for bringing these items into our hobby.

Conclusion

These kits are well-done and reasonably-priced. It’s easy to order from Vietnam and deal with B&L . When ordering, be sure to let them know that you read about it on this site.
